GETTING IN THE FLOW

When creativity opens, it can feel beautiful and alive. Ideas begin flowing, time disappears, and the heart feels inspired. I recently noticed that when I am in that creative flow, it can also be harder to wind down at night. The mind is still creating, imagining, and processing new ideas.

This is very natural. Creativity can activate the nervous system in an energized way, so the body may still feel alert even when it is time to rest.

A few gentle practices can help transition from creativity into calm.

Stop creating about 1 hour before going to bed.Write down any ideas that are still coming through so the mind can relax.Try to get ready for bed before 10 or 10:30 pm if possible. You can incorporate and of these ideas to see if they are helpful for you:

Meditation or slow breathing.Soothing music.Reading a book.A crossword puzzle.Journaling.Quiet stargazing.

These simple practices help signal to the nervous system that it is safe to move from inspiration into rest.

Sometimes deeper factors can also keep the body alert. The nervous system may still be holding stress, shock, or old survival patterns that keep the body in a heightened state. Toxins that weren’t able to process out of your system may also affect sleep for some people.

Creativity is a gift. When we gently support the nervous system afterward, we allow both creativity and rest to exist together in a healthy balance.
